When Worlds End and Only Faith Remains

Today worlds ended and a promised future was lost. Today, Yonatan Deutsch died...no, that's not true. He didn't die...he was murdered. He was 23 years old and all he did "wrong" was drive on a road that I have driven on a million times.

No, not really, but I know the road, I've driven all the curves and the turns, the places you can pass and the places that you'll have to follow a truck forever before you can finally get ahead of it.

The name Yonatan means "God has given" - and from all stories I have heard, Yonatan was indeed a gift given to his family, his friends, his community, his army brothers, and so many others.

Today, terrorists decided to open fire and they killed Yonatan...his world ended and for all intents and purposes, so did a part of the worlds of his entire family...and a promised future was lost.

This is Yonatan...and this is Emuna. Emuna, like Yonatan, is a beautiful name. Emuna means faith. Three months ago, to the delight of both families, Yonatan asked Emuna to marry him and the families began planning a wedding.

Aren't they beautiful. You can just feel the love and the happiness. Emuna's world was crushed today, the promised future with Yonatan stolen from her.

Did CNN tell you about Yonatan? About Emuna?

What happens when all that is left is faith? When love is taken, but not destroyed? When darkness comes to extinguish light? It is a question we are all asking ourselves today in Israel as we now plan Yonatan's funeral and try to hold back tears for the wedding that will never be.
